Rain cap

Keep your tipi dry

Protection of the tent interior from rain.

A tipi is an architectural system built around natural ventilation. The open smoke hole at the apex essential for airflow and fire management also creates a direct entry point for rain. In many climates, this is not occasional exposure, but a constant condition.

The BIGHEAD Rain Cap is a precision engineered solution designed to protect this critical point. It bridges traditional design with the practical requirement of a dry, usable interior.

Engineering dryness in real conditions

The primary function of the rain cap is to cover the gap where the poles intersect. Without a rain cap, water follows the path of least resistance, running down the wooden poles and dripping directly into the centre of the living space. The interior becomes wet.

  • Apex protection:
The rain cap covers the junction where the poles cross. Without protection, water follows the path of least resistance running along the poles or dripping directly into the centre of the space.
  • Surface tension control:
By shielding the crown, the rain cap diverts the majority of rainfall away from the round poles. This reduces moisture transfer along the wood and prevents the “soaking” effect that can accelerate mould formation on the canvas.
  • Protection for timber flooring:
For tipis equipped with wooden flooring, moisture management is critical. Repeated exposure to rain can lead to warping, staining, and long-term degradation. A rain cap significantly reduces this risk, helping to preserve the integrity of the floor.
  • Performance in wind:
It is important to be precise, a rain cap is not a sealed system. In heavy storms with strong wind, some lateral spray may enter. However, there is a substantial difference between minor ingress and continuous water penetration. The rain cap transforms internal conditions from vulnerable to controlled.

The BIGHEAD Rain Cap solves this by protecting the apex of the tipi while maintaining proper airflow.

Technical Integration & airflow

A common concern is whether a rain cap restricts the tipi’s ability to “breathe.” Our system is engineered with sufficient clearance above the apex, allowing smoke and hot air to escape freely while still preventing direct rain ingress.

  • Material integrity:
We use heavy-duty, UV-stabilised canvas matched to the tension characteristics of the main canvas. When properly tensioned, it does not sag or form water pockets.
  • Operational simplicity:
The rain cap is installed during the initial setup. Once positioned over the pole cluster, it remains secure and requires no ongoing adjustment, even as the smoke flaps are actively move.
